AVM 20 Compatibility Tips

Problem
: Projector image flickers when trying to display the AVM 20's setup menu (this is a known problem with the S-Video connection on the Marantz VP-12S2 DLP projector).

Cause: Projector can't synchronize to the AVM 20's on-screen display, which is non-interlaced.

Solution: Turn VCR mode "On" -- On the Marantz projector this is found under Main Menu / Picture Adjust / Fine Menu / Miscellaneous / VCR mode. (Other projector brands may call this Game Mode). After you are finished with the AVM 20's setup menus, the projector should be reset to VCR mode "Off" because the overall picture quality will be better.

Problem: The AVM 20 doesn't recognize a coax RCA digital audio signal from a TV with a built-in digital tuner (known problem with some Mitsubishi rear-projection TVs).

Cause: The S/PDIF output of the TV has excessive DC offset (1200 mV vs. the specified tolerance of 50 mV or less). (DC stands for Direct Current).

Solution: Block the DC offset -- This can be done in one of two ways, and either method works equally well. The first is to use the AES/EBU input instead of the RCA input, through an RCA to XLR adapter. AES/EBU inputs are transformer-coupled, and transformers block DC. Another way to block DC is through a capacitor in series. If the AES/EBU connection is already in use, a small value capacitor (e.g. .22 uF) can be put in series with the RCA connection with the same result (have your Anthem™ dealer perform this).

Problem: Turntable records sound weak and unbalanced when connected to the AVM 20.

Cause: The signal from a turntable needs to go through a phono preamp before going to any preamp that doesn't have a phono input. A phono preamp turns the signal from a turntable into standard 'line level' by boosting it and equalizing it according to RIAA specification.

Solution: Connect a phono preamp between the turntable and the AVM 20. If you don't have a phono preamp, contact your Anthem™ dealer. If you are using a low-output moving coil cartridge, a phono preamp with a high gain setting, or an input transformer, is required.
